just wondering if design firms find it annoying to receive mailed self promotional pieces, in advance of phone calls. i'm looking for design jobs and i'm thinking about sending a mailer letting a few places know that i'm going to call them. good idea or no?

I don't mind a self promo mailer. Send away.

no. because they have already something in mind before you call them.
better explain first who you are and what you do by phone, and after that send them some promos.

unless you stutter.

if its something good then send it.....generally if its just a shitty postcard it goes straight in the bin!

you can do what you like, that doesn't mean the design firm HR people care to speak to you to be honest with you. some will say ok, some will say f*ck off.

I only send self promo pieces when I am snail mailing or dropping of a package that consists of my self promo, resume, cover ltr./salary req., bus. card in a nice folder in a nice envelop it's quite nice.

does anyone have examples of good/clever self promo mailers?

Not exactly self-promo, but I know of someone who made a resume out of a grocery store paper bag & string and got the job.

Send it... then Call.
If it's good they'll remember your promo piece.

what tparsons said....if you gots tha skillz you gots tha skillzz

I would call first to ask who to address the self promo to. This really applies to larger companies that have HR depts. In smaller firms, everyone will end up looking at it. Then mail it. Then call after a few days asking for the name of the contact you got on your first call.
