if your HTML isn't strictly valid do some browsers show an error in the status bar?
how can I get around it without fixing the code? can I just remove the doctype from the top or..???

nah cant do that, they aint paying, its just shit like missing ALT tags and how come dreamweaver uses 'topmargin' and marginwidth etc if they're not valid?
so this is the reason they get 'error on page' in the status bar?

that's usually only javascript errors that do that i think.
