Planning a trip there in Sept. Plan on doing some hiking and camping for 4 days up the Na Pali Coast. Seems like you need a permit to camp. Anyone know anything about this? I've done lots of camping on Maui and I never had a permit but I've never been to Kauai. I can't seem to get anyone over at the Gov center on the phone. People on Hawaii are difficult to get in touch with. Always out surfing. Any info would be appreciated.
Mahalo.

if it's anything like camping in michigan with a permit...what you have to do is get a hold of the campgrounds and reserve a campsite and they'll give you all the shit you need.
yeah? i dont know...

Not quite the same as Michigan. I'll be carrying all my stuff. The campsites are merely places that allow you to set up a tent. No facilities to speak of. I'm guessing that they are not very well policed seeing as how the areas are so remote but who knows. Anyone else?

sounds like michigan so far as youve described.
here you have to contact the state camp thing or whatever and get a thing so you can camp. or usually at the entrance of the camping ground there is a little ranger's building you can get permits from.

Went camping in Kauai last year. Bought a permit only to show up to the campsite and find a colony of homeless hawaiins living on the beach in tents.....seriously.
We went out one day and came back to find that our tent had been pillaged and my shoes had been stolen!
I figured that since I was in paradise everything would be fine......guess you gotta watch your back everwhere.
After that we bucked up and stayed in a hotel the rest of the trip. The camp site at Wailua.

effour...that sucks. My experience in Maui was slightly better but I know what you're sayin about the homeless dudes camping by the beach. I was planning on keeping my stuff with me at all times rather than leave anything at the camp site. I just plan on sleeping, waking up the next day then hiking somewhere else.
So do you think I need a permit?
