In your opinion does a sucessful logo need type or can it just be a symbol?

Nah, it doesn't always need type... that is, if it's already an established brand, e.g. Nike's swoosh.

That's a very general question. Really it depends on a number of factors. It all depends on the type of logo and it's use... well... that along with a million other things.

The ideal thing is just type but with a symbol hidden within. Study the FedEx logo and you'll see why it's - in my opinion - the greatest logo ever.

Antonspagetti is right, if the brand isn't familiar for consumers YET, then it definitely needs type to relate the brand with its name

That is really cool jox. I never noticed the arrow before. I always liked the logo though.
Here is an article I found that addresses the different types of logos.

i agree jox totally, but lots of wordmarks with an 'x' in them seem to have incorporated the arrow effect before FedEx redo, and i wonder if that creates a loss in its power.........no to mention it is a pretty subconscious effect....i mean most lay people will never notice it
