what kind of effect do you need? i used to make quite a lot of them in illy to explore the possibilities..

you can do it in freehandMX using the 'duet' filter and fiddling with your shapes and settings.. I'd guess there was something similar in illy.

you would also problably be interested in a filter for illy called panopticum array.. its dope when used properly

it would have been great if you could see the process in my ai-file.. like undo's would still be in there, but i don't think so?
it's really:
-draw an oval
- object > transform > transform each > horiz. 102% > vert. 92%
- ctrl(cmd)+d to repeat
-group ovals
- rotate 20°
- ctrl(cmd)+d to repeat
till you have the full circle..
