If it's for video work it will hurt you in the end. You might look cool editing video at the coffee shop but you now have a slower hard drive- less memory options, no PCI, no possible processor upgrades, and a REALLY hot lap.
Scrap the cool factor- get work done instead. Stay with the desktop.

i just like the post name its funny

do it. cos I did. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... cough.
i'd usually agree with qburt but power macs were updated 50 days ago... usually updates happen after 150 days or so. plus, g5 books probably wont come until early next year.

As far as I could understand from spymac.com, the G5 PBs won't be out in the coming year or so.
Apple has just upgraded it's G4 range so it makes little economic sense to come with a brand new product when the current one sells like there is no tomorrow...
Whatever your choice, the G4 PB has a long-long life span ahead. I have a PB myself and am more than happy with the purchase. Wouldn't want a desktop or any other lappy.
A Maxtor firewire HDD is a must though... Same thing for an AirPort card and iSight ;-). Check the new AirPort Express as well ;-). www.apple.com

I'd be tempted to stick with a desktop. You're doing video work. It seems like you would need upgradability (adding hard drives, PCI cards and a new video card).
Your upgradability will be severely limited with a PB. Yes firewire can cover you for external drives. But what if you need a faster DVD burner? What if you'd like to upgrade your processor? You don't necessarily have to buy a new machine to get better performance.
Just my two cents...

at least wait till after the developers conference....
thats goign on now.. so you wont have to wait long
- tymeframe0
i dunno, they were just updated in april so i'm thinking now is the time to buy.
- Donvitoviti0
he'll be waiting a while for the G5s... but i do agree that you should wait until after this month.... all the new stuff is coming out.. and you never know what apple has up its sleeves

Ya..
pick up the Maxtor 250 gig 7200 rpm firewire drive...
that puppy is nice.. i just picked one up from amazon.... 260 free shipping. plus 40 dollar rebatehttp://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
great price... this drive also has one touch back up of files.. really slick
- ribit0
but how does the Firewire transfer speed compare?
You'll want to have external Firewire drives for backup anyway...
- tymeframe0
but the hd's will surely be fast enough to capture video right?
- ecnalab0
I suggest getting an external firewire drive since the internal PB drives are slow.

DOOO IEEEET

i d go for it..

I had an 867 desktop but gave it up when i got my 17" pb, if you keep the screen that will be a bonus, but I would definitely invest in the PB, just seems easier and more convenient
