it seems like norton 04 really sucks right now....
http://download.com.com/3302-223…im looking for alternatives. any recommendations?

they all suck... Norton will update as soon as a new definition file is released. Mcafee only checks on restart...
Norton is a complete memory hog when auto protect is enabled.
Mcafee not so bad in that dept.
Mcafee has caught the most virii on my comp.
it's up to you. try the demos..

I'm using Avast! AV.
Used it in conjunction with my bundled Norton...Virus came in before I used Avast... the attack was when Norton was trying to download the updates haha...
So now I use 2 simultaneously and never let them update at the same time.

i installed norton '04 a month ago because being behind a university's firewall, didnt really need it. plus i use ad-aware 6 pro and spybot search & destroy...
used norton once ONLY because it had to scan before it installed itself...and then i uninstalled because there is no way to make not run ALL THE FUCKING TIME and its gay little task manager icon is teh ghey™.
ye-ep.
so, any cooler anti-virus warez out there other than mcafee and norton?

I just use mcafee's free scan every so often. otherwise I use adaware, and search and destroy.
so far so good.

adaware, and search and destroy are just ad-ware removers, not virus protection, dont rely soley on them.

A mate is a security officer for j&j and he swears by McAfee. They have managed to escape the latest bout of viruses that went around when most other Multinational companies suffered. Take what you will from that.

remember to use ZoneAlarm (firewall) in conjunction with your AVs.
AVG is another freebie AV you can use.

Norton AV 2004 is the most complete virus protection out there. I mean it might be a bit memory consuming, but it protects me from malicious emails (packed with viruses), scans my outgoing mails, checks downloads automatically and so on.
Now, is there another AV package that does all these things? I'm sorry but I don't see how you can get this protection without AV running in the background.

I've been using AVG (free-version) at home for a year or two now and it has worked really well. I did have one problem about 6 or 7 months ago when there was a virus in the news I found the virus updater had difficulty connecting to their server. It took a day or so before I could connect and update. This only happened once.

McAffee. Better than NAV.

AVG is crap. It let some crapy virus let through and slow down my comp so much that i had to reinstall winXP.
use Northon now.

norton is resource consuming but it offers great protection and support as well
