So I've done two development projects for a client back in mid april. It's now June and I haven't received any payment for either of the projects but he's contacted me to start in on a third. He keeps saying that he's waiting for the company that hired him to design the projects to pay him first.
Should I just tell him I'm not doing any more work until I get paid for the first two? The new project has a pretty quick turn around and I'm worried that if I piss him off too bad he'd just not pay me at all.
any advice is appreciated!

hold out
it is understandable that he doesnt have cash flow to pay you but business is business
if this dude is only big client you have than watch it but if not fuck him get your money

What was the established contract or verbal contract? And are you talking hundreds or thousands? Right off the bat tho, I'd say time to get wise and don't do anymore work without understanding that you may not get paid.

I have emails from him agreeing to my invoice and payment info. This is a guy that I used to work with so I didn't have any idea he'd pull a deal like this. It's just over $1k worth of work.

Don't do any work until he pays.

that's happened to me before...wait for your money. your contract was with him, and i'm sure you didn't agree that he'd pay you when he got paid from the third party.
that's always the lamest excuse.

not oonly do you need to get your money you should tax him on it...plus for the next job...make sure that your payment plan with him is fully written out...make sure that you get your money as you hand in your work, or comps and get paid for each...good luck!

i once sub-contracted a friend of mine for a small job. my client was a prick and i didn't get paid for 7 months, but i paid my friend the second he delivered the project to me...from my own pocket.
some people are very unethical - don't send the signal that you can be taken advantage of.

I think anyone who has freelanced has unfortunately been in your shoes.
Business is Business. Today I picked up a pair of shoes from the shoe repair guy, I paid $40 half up front, half on delivery. You think if i didn't buck up with the cash the shoe guy would give me my shoes? Hell no. It's a question that doesn't need to be asked.
Anyway whether you like it or not you are running your own business, and every time someone slips up paying you it makes you look unprofessional, because you lose respect in your clients eyes, and with yourself.
Anyway holmes in closing, I would get off Newstoday and go get your hard earned cash $$$$$$$$$

No doubt sputnik-
In my experience friends are the only suckas you have to worry about when it comes to getting paid. Anyone else would be too scared to not pay. Its bad business. So, your friend should buck up and pay outta pocket til he gets paid.
