I cant make my powrbook to connect to my house pc network, my roomate has a Dlink Wireless Modem DL-624
I downloaded every single airport update and Im running panther..
My Airport doesnt show the network, and when I tell it what it is, it says there is an error and I cant connecto to the network

you might need to connect manually via, select "other..." from the airport options.
find the SSID on the router config page and use that as network name in the connect panel.

Would help if you turn on 'Broadcast SSID', at least until you have successfully connected once. That way you can just choose it from the list, and get into your 'known networks' list.
It's important to isolate if your problem is in seeing the network vs connecting to the DHCP server on it...

and... either turn off WEP on the router for the moment, or make sure you have the WEP key to enter when you choose the network.

i have a bunch of macs here and want to get rid of the wires - would you only reccomend an airport base station then?

i use a adsl wireless router and have used it for a year just on pc's. I just got an iBook and dropped an airport card in it and it worked with no messing about.
compare the price of an airport base station to a cheap wifi router i'm glad i didn't waste extra money

which wifi router?
- shutdown0
i got it from ebuyer.co.uk
it's their budget router. I think it's made by Orico or something like that. Cost me £50 over a year ago so it should be cheaper now.

netgear make a nice combo dsl/wireless/router:

Thanks !
But I already tried the "other" option, since there is no other option to select on the menu, cause my card is not seeing the network.
Then we disabled the wep password, but my laptop is still asking me for one, Im stuck..
anyone been through this before?
thanks for the help!

I have used my powerbook with tons of networks. Microsoft base station and linksys are my personal faves... very easy to manage and good stability.
To answer your question... Dlink is one of the worst Routers you can get... So many problems with them I dont know how they are in buisness.
I think your card is not seeing the network maybe because your Dlink router does not have Discoverable turned on.... check that our first.

so far so good with Asante products. my basestation was funky when i first got it...no clue why. have run the updates and things for it and it seems fine. i think most of my problems came from living in an apartment complex with so many other wireless routers.

don't waste your loot on the airport base. if you're worried about mac compatibility, which you shouldn't be, then get what apple recommends, the belkin

???
I never said I was going to buy an airport.. I need it to work with the router I already have..:(

It should just join the network if WEP is turned off. Have you turned 'Broadcast SSID' on so you just have to choose a network from the menu?

i eat you

Ok:
I manage to go online, but only when my laptop is right next to the router, if I go 6 steps away from the router I loose my connection, and I know my friend's pc goes to the end of the house with no problems, do you think my card is deffective?
