next summer maybe? the g4s were out for more than a year before they were able to cool em down enough.
- devaur0
They said probably more likely to see a G4 dual before the G5.
I guess the G5 is to hard to keep cool.

your best source for upcoming products and news
- jox0
Cool, thanks!
I'm debating whether or not to wait for a new pb to hit the market, but a year.. thats a while : /
- mitsu0
what you need is a p-p-p-powerbook
- jox0
It won't load mitsu! I wanna see - what is it?
- Gilt0010
I'd be surprised to see it anytime soon. The heatsink on those things is the size of a power supply... Not to mention a G5 has like 7 custom cooling fans. It'll be cool when Apple DOES pull it off though.
- jox0
Right, yeah i guess it require some heavy engineering skills before they manage to shrink those massive cooling thingies down, so i guess i'll just pick one up right about now...
- meok0
jox, why are YOU asking about macs?
- Mimio0
They did fit dual G5's in a 1u server unit, which is about twice the thinkness of a powerbook. I say they'll do it by Christmas.
- jox0
I'm sorry, its just that a few people here at the office got theiir pb's today and I can't help... um..being attracted to them. Sexually attracted even.
But don't worry, I'll run dual so I'm partly on the right side :)
- jox0
Hmm you're right Mimio! Dammit - stupid mixed signals! So should I get one now or wait them out? Whatchoo reckon?
- Soler0
i say wait. I'm waiting for a PBG5 too. Anything else would just bum me out as soon as they cam out with the G5.
Then you can make your work peeps jealous too!

Just check to see when the conferences are. Thats always when new products are released.
The next MacWorld or Seybold will be a whole new line or products im sure.
MacWorld is usually when they release the biggest products.

Jox, bear in mind that any place that a 1U server would be used properly would be in a server room with a carefully controlled climate.

Just get teh G4, insure it, when teh G5 is announced wait till rev B, and trip with your G4 in your arms.

You won't be seeing a G5 update for a while, but the revision to the 970 (G5) chipset, the 970fx, will probably be what's on the horizon for the powerbook. There was some speculation of a 4 core low-power system going around, but the software engineering for it to work wouldn't be feasible.
On the other hand, we all might be seeing an update to the G5 towers with a different chipset, the 975, in the near future. It's based off of the IBM Power5 (whereas the 970 was based off the IBM Power4). It's not just a bump in ghz, but a Dual 3ghz rev b G5 will run like a Dual 4ghz rev a (the current one) G5. Twice the top-end machine on our desktops today.
Food for thought.
And don't go to macrumors, Appleinsider is much better.

You might see more than the OSX Tiger preview at WWDC coming up in June, but it's hard to say. In keeping with Steve Jobs' 3ghz promise for this summer, he has till the end of September.
There should have been a bumped G5 tower in the spring, but IBM was having problems putting their fabs to 90nm process. They're on target now, but I think the promise was made with the aforementioned chipset (the 975) in mind.
You might be seeing the spring revision chipset in the iMac sooner or later too. And as we all know, the tech between the iMac and the Powerbook have always been interrelated.

Whoa, thanks netbanshee! you've sure done your apple homework :)
Yeah that break-the-insured-g4 does sound tempting, but then again, I wouldn't have the heart to destry such a beautiful thing.
