Ok im trying to select a new disk on startup.(10.1) When I go to the System Pref. The disk are not showing. When I hit show all nothing happens. Any ideas. In addition to this IE will not run and I can not copy and paste any type of file.

You are trying to select a different startup disk? Is the Startup Disc pane not showing at all?
Have you tried Disk utility and Repair Permissions and Rpair Disk?
Then there is always the FSCK repair thing you can go to on startup but I'm not so familiar with it...

The startup disc pane is showing, but only half the panel is showing. It is not showing the actual discs. And I tried Disk utility and Repair Permissions. The repair buttons are shadowed out. What is the FSCK repair?

upgrade to 10.3 and fix all your problems

10.3 is probably your best bet... beats spending your time fixing an old system...
