Thinking about getting it to learn CSS layout stuff instead of tables..

don't know the book but the most important thing about css reference material is that it should cover the cross browser / cross platform issues. or at least show in which browser something does or doesn't work. saves you a lot of time debugging.

"Appreciate why maintaining tables is a nightmare and how CSS can help"
to me now is:
"Appreciate why maintaining CSS is a nightmare and how tables can help"
after a while i learned it is the other way, thanks to incompatible browsers that need 'hacks' in CSS. Makes it truly annoying and time consuming to stick to css only. i am using more and more tables again, gives me less of a headache.

So what resources did you use to get started?
A List Apart? Any other obvious ones?
I haven't search the PVN yet, where I'm sure to find some resources, just courious if there is any one thing that really helped getting started in this area.

that zeldman book is great. you will not think about design the same after reading it.
it is more for changing your thinking, and the philosophy behind css layouts, which is very usefull.i would consider gettign that and Eric Meyer on CSS.
that book is more technical.despite what other people may say, CSS is the way to go.
at first you may want to go transitional with 2 or 3 tables.all-be-it that some browsers have little issues (eg. box model) there are ways to hack those, and they are readily available from zeldman.com, or ericmeyeroncss.com, or ALA.
it is well worth your time to learn this stuff, you will see the weight of your page decrease, and you will see how easy it is to make site wide layout changes.
good luck,
