That's a good read Anarchitect.
I guess I coming from a different perspective all together. I chose .NET because it was an easy switch from C++ and I can use the same technology for my software programming. Plus, I don't own my own business and don't have to worry about costs. Another reason for .NET is that it makes me a more marketable employee, at least in my area.
I have done work with PHP and have no complaints, but I have a lot more ability in .NET because of the time I have spent with it.

I use both. A real developer will embrace a specific language for the correct job.

MS SQL and ASP kick ass. Learn MS SQL and you'll make more $. The time it takes to do stuff in MS SQL is great. It's easy to do complicated tasks and probably easier to develop with in general.
I tried MySQL and couldn't deal with the command line bullshit. ugh.

I just created a pretty complicated CRM system in 4 days using SQLServer and ASP.
The DB end of it only took half a day. . .over a dozen tables. All indexes, relationships, and constraints are sorted. My queries take like 5 minutes each. Stored procedures for all the inserts and updates. It's just clean, powerful, and easy. that's all I'm saying.
M$ hasn't gotten a penny from me yet, so who cares. my only point is that it's quicker, easier, and you can do more with it.I guess it all depends on what you're doing,
