they are both very good on their own for what they are. Akira is a very good story while the Matrix started out as a good story and ended up only being a very good idea ruined by its creators.

how can you compare the masterwork that's Akira with that boring and ugly aniMatrix?!
The Matrix turns out to be only a money-making object which is quite a shame given that the very first movie was amazing!

Ugly?! Shite, Final Flight of the Osiris has to be the epitome of 3d animation. There are many varied styles and the creators took a lot of creative liberty with their stories.
Can't compare to Akira as I've never seen it.

aint exactly apples and apples here...
animatrix was done by different groups each with their own interpretation of the matrix world, while akira is one straight story thru-out.
both have their merits, but i prefer the pace of most of the animatrix ones (except the hypercoloured cybersex ones by the koreans)

u cant answer this without watching Akira.
for a film done back in 87 ( im not sure though ), the quality and picture is amazing.
animatrix was okey, but in no way it can be compared to the masterpiece that Akira is, especially when there is like a 15 year gap between them.

I've seen Akira 3 times. But as I was under the influece of several "bad things" I have a tough time remembering any of it...
