atrac only!
no mp3, no ogg, no (whatever ipod uses)sony might as well just give up trying to sell digital audio equipment if they're going to keep appeasing their recording franchises
- mrdobolina0
wtf is ogg?
- gabriel_pc0
hasn't sony called the last 14 products they've launched "ipod killers"?
- planet010
I hate sony for this reason, always using proprietary crap.
As if i am really going to take the time to convert all my .mp3 files over to atrac (whatever that is).

8 track

oggVorbis is an opensource alternative to .mp3
- mrdobolina0
what's wrong with mp3's toastie?
- tymeframe0
usb sucks too

apple's "headless" unit due out soon should do a good job sweeping up.
- gabriel_pc0
it's usb2, which is all good. but other than that, it's ass. Apple needs to put out a portable media center. Take the ipod and stretch the screen to a 5" x 4" color lcd. I'd buy that in a second.

1) OggVorbis has better compression than Mp3 per file size.
2) MP3 is a patented file format, ie. if you develop a program that uses mp3 compression, you ideally would have to pay royalty fees (i dont think thats very enforced though)

and Mp3 is being changed to include drm as well.
I laughed when I read about sony and their proprietary file type too. I don't know why these silly bastards don't jsut coming out wit hsome players that will handle ALL music formats...
It's not up to the hardware companies to offer drm compatible only shit, that's for us to decide.
Just give us a dope player that lets us play what ever the fuck format we like.
wav, ogg, acc, mp3, smp3, who gives a shit.. i want to play em all. And it should work with bluetooth, rf, wifi, firewire and usb2
- unfittoprint0
AGAIN a very stupid move from Sony.
Why oh why they try to push their stupid standards?
Why don't they just throw some billions of dollars to a 3rd world country?
They're gonna lose it anyway...
- enobrev0
had a thought the other day while swiping away at tiger 2004... why didn't sony use those damned memory sticks on their ps2? Not sure how I'd feel about having to use one, but they use them with everything else.
- kpl0
i think there's a memory card > memory stick adapter somewhere.
but i can imagine why sony would think memory sticks would be too fragile for kids to handle regularly.
- strabley0
ipod is solid state.... beat that sony.
- kpl0
bs. ipod has a spinning hard drive inside.
- strabley0
im speaking of the interface, look at the glutnous buttons on that sony
- ronaldo0
Like Sony's other digital music players, the Pocket will only play songs encoded in the company's own ATRAC 3 format.
booo
- ddefenba0
Sony is trying to become the Apple of the PC world. Their proprietary formats suck for most, but if you go all Sony then you can probably have your $1200 robotic dog play music wirelessly. Why you'd do that nobody knows.
- quik0
ust give us a dope player that lets us play what ever the fuck format we like.
wav, ogg, acc, mp3, smp3, who gives a shit.. i want to play em all. And it should work with bluetooth, rf, wifi, firewire and usb2
--word to that.
