...gradient effect on a background (tileable) image?
It is obviously really simple, but I thought I would ask you guys anyway!

Create a gradient that is 1px wide and about 1200+ px high (more pixels if you are going to have long vertical scrolling pages).
If you want to view it all, just create the image size to be something like 1600x1200px. Then change the image size to 1px and save it. That should give you the bg file to tile in your bg.

Oh, keep in mind how it would look if somebody was viewing it from, lets say, 800x600px res as well too.
I think the example would be such as the bg on macromedias site:

I usually make an image about 400 px high and let it fade out to the bg color of the page and then set the background image to repeat-x.
