I work for an on-air promotions software company. Hi.
A keyword search we'd like to dominate is "broadcast on air promotion software" with "broadcast" being the emphasis--we have the other options cornered.
here's the result for that search. whyyyyy does Google just catalogue the top contenders? how do we escape this nonsense?

Start by making sure all your meta tags are square. Add "broadcast on air promotion software" to your page title, and make sure the same text appears prominently on the first page in a text (non-image) format.
Register with Google and list same, but expect it to take a little while before they catalogue you.
Finally, go go message boards commerce community boards, and anywhere else you can post your link and post it. The more hits you get from different sites, and the more it appears in non-image form on different sites, the better your results will be.
If you want, you can also pay $20K and get your shit ranked higher on all the major search engines...but really, who has the dough to do that besides Ford and IBM?

Go buy a book on search engine optimization. All us creative type really don't give a stuff about seo - that's for those annoying marketing/sales types ;) We'd rather be pushing pixels

It's something that takes months - part of the seo formula used by google involves the value of how many sites are linked to the site you are listing which makes it near impossible to get very high rankings unless you have some success already.
Companies that do offer the service at charge only ever guarantee first page (not first result) and they usually charge a monthly fee to maintain this position for a period of time.
Generally, you're not going to get a huge amount of traffic from a search engine anyway - you have to market your site other ways. I've done sites that get excess of 100,000 hits a day and it's always less than 1% that come from search engines.

You have got your Google 'style' filter on... If you go to your Google preferences, you can switch it off and your site will be top of the list!

i don't see a "style" pref with Google.
do you have a link please?
