Muller Brockmann: Rastersysteme fur die visuelle Gestaltung / Gird Systems in Graphic Design
Muller Brockmann: Pioneer of Swiss Graphic Design.
Both superb books. Muller Brockmann is the grid don but he is REALLY strict. Some designers find him really restrictive but it's good to know the rules before you break them.
disclaimer: Other books are availiable.

Do you have one?
If so:Which one?

Does you find you use it a lot in your work?

I've got both and I use them every new project. They ARE pretty rigid tho I just don't want you to by them and then go; 'Muller Brockmann's a design nazi!' cos he's pretty strict...
erm I'm waffling...
I have them both and I use them all the time.

Yeah, Id heard he was pretty strict, I like what you said about learning the rules before breaking them tho, that makes a lot of sense...
Rufcut, can I see some work youve done after being inspired by 'the grid' books?
Be nice to see how you have approached something after reading it...

Love your personal website, very nice!!!!
Do you know of anywhere on the web that shares grid systems like the ones found in brockmans book?
- Rufcut0
Nah. If you read the books though it's all about mearuring your medium then fitting the correct number words per line.
If you get into the habit it's pretty easy you just have to spend a bit of time measuring verything out at the start. I useually set up my psd and then put gutters on it depending on how I want it to look. Then I work out how big I want the copy and type about ten words and then set the columns to that. Trust me buy the books and you'll spend about six months messing about with the ideas and then you'll just start adapting the rules to suit your medium.

Grid Systems in Graphic Design will give you a great base to build upon.
Don't study the thing, just try and grasp the general ideas.. The practical application of the methods is what takes time to develop..
I don't really design on anything other than a grid nowdays.. and make sure to sketch out your layouts before you start.. so much easier/faster to organize the flow of your information.. and try different layouts/compositions in a short amount of time..
