what psu do i need for a p4 system? 300w? would a 230w do?

230 will do just fine, i am running a 2.8 with 4 pci cards, 3 powered usb devices, and 6 drives on a 230.. but the power supply get really hot, and scares me sometimes. If you're going for a smaller setup a 230watt will be fine, but make sure it has the 4-pin P4 motherboard connector!

In my experience, the more power the better. Tis best to have an overhead and not need it than to need one and not have it.

honestly, with th newer video cards, and your likely need for lots of storage go with 400-50+. I would never stoop below 350.

good point there atomica...
also worth getting a surge protector with a value of products guarantee on it too.
invest in plenty of case fans, or, if you prefer, water cooling...

Don't need too many case fans if you get a decent case. I got lucky with mine it was a cheap ATX with 400 watt (generic brand psu) and it came with one 120mm fan, all I did was add another to the back and it runs nice and cool, 30 degrees c. idle, 40 c. after some gaming. All for under 50 bucks.
