my sister's an artist, and she always said that artists only get rich when they kick the bucket.
ironic, but that's the mentality of the collector. the dead can never draw again, so the item goes into limited edition.

It's $104m dollars, not ££'s (in pounds its like £65m).
Anyway, I wanted people to talk about what a masterpiece the painting was rather than go on about how ridiculous the price-tag is. Obviously it's not "worth" $104m. Nothings worth that much. Just a bit of canvas and paint. I ony said it was worth it cos i thought it reflected how everyone appreciates thats its such a wonderful and important painting, thats all.Anyway, i think it's my favourite one of his paintings (apart from Guernica which i love how epic it is). The crying women and showering ho's never did it for me. But this one really impacts me. I love the contrast between the warmth of the flowers and the cold blue of the boy. Look at his face, it's so grey - he looks soooo depressed and melancholic. Yet, he's so sultry. So effeminate looking, his eyes in shadow - all seductive, his lips look so pursed and he's sitting there with his legs spread. Very seductive. And i also love the effect he creates with the forced perspective on the pipe. It totally draws me in and gets an emotional responce from me. Sorry, i'm not a very eloquent art critic, but i just love this painting :)

you can't really appreciate a painting until you see it in person.
maybe it is worth 104million once you see it up close.

ironic that a Vermeer would only fetch about 7 mil

I bet 'Girl with a pearl earring' would fetch a bit more than 7 mil. That painting i can see shelling out a $100 mil for. It's sublime.
