Definition of SPAM

After writing a comment on a friend's blog, I signed my name and put my site's URL right next. He believes:
"spamming is a synomyn for advertising"
I totally diagree with that.
So, I told him that, "In a recent judicial decision rendered by the Supreme Court of the State of Washington, the justices of that state's highest court formally endorsed the view that:

spam is junk I don't want in my email sent to me by people I don't know.
chainletters from friends isn't spam... but chainletters from people I don't know is just someone sending me crap.
I think spam is advertising in the email.
