you get nothing at ALL when you power it on?
if this is the case.. you can go out and buy a new power supply.. less than $30 in most cases
you'll wanna shoot for around 350 watts.. just to be on the safe side..
http://www.monarchcomputer.com/M…
there's a start..
let me know .. they are pretty easy to install.. just go in.. look at how everything is connected to it.. and reconnect everything the same way with the new power-supply installed.. you should NOT have to pay someone else to install something like this for you..

del - thanks for the info
yep, i get nothing. nada. i'll try the new power supply. if that doesn't work, is there anything thing else that i could try?

tried tech support?
or a techie friend who'd help.

on the back of the case, where the power supply plugs in there should be a master power switch. If you bumped that accidentally, it would have that effect.
- mrdobolina0
open up the case, plug it in and see if there is a light on your motherboard. if there is and it lights up it may not be the PS. call compaq.
- jakeyj0
eli - there's no master power switch in the back. thanks though
mrdobolina - there's no light on the motherboard. does that mean its the PS for sure?
- moth0
could mean the motherboard is fried...
I got one here just like it :(
- zeroblade0
could you have toasted the power box? there is a small red 110/240 switch on most powerboxes here... US runs 110v.
- jakeyj0
zeroblade - good thinking. i thought i checked that but i may not have. if by some chance it did get flipped to 240, would it have immediately toasted it, or would it do it over a period of time?
- mrdobolina0
so jakey, there is a light on the MB that isnt lit up, or there is no light whatsoever?

this might not necessarily be a new PC.. so it might not necessarily have a light on the Mobo...
i suggest.... unplug all cords from the PS (out of each drive and also off from the motherboard.. ) and re-seating those.. then doublecheck the red switch thing..
if those don't help.. then try the powersupply change out before you go calling compaq..
where you live? if yer in ATL i could help you out locally..///del

toasting goes immediate... and depending on your capacitor inside the p-box, you'd have anything from a little smoke to barbeque friendly.
you should hear fan(s) spinning when you power on. failing that there's nothing you can diagnose about the other parts.
you could do google search for forums, etc:
http://www.google.com.sg/search?…another possibility is two very small cables on the MB itself that has to be connected to the power portion... (argh it's hard to describe)
perhaps it helps if you could tell the folks here more details... like are you installing new stuff or it worked previously simply stopped working now.
- del_razor0
take a picture of the inside of your PC with the side of the case off... get like 3 angles.. so we can see everything inside.. and from that.. we should definitely be able to tell about the power supply connections.. if they are connected properly. ;)

thanks everyone for your help. wish i could snap some photos but i'm at work and can't get home to the PC. there is no light on the MB as it is about a 4 year old PC. I tried reseating the cables. but that got nothing. the PS definitely didn't get fried because there was no smoke, etc.
i had the same problem twice before. both times i fiddled around with it, and it just started back up. this time i woke my computer up from sleep and it was frozen so i restarted, then got nothing.
keep it coming - i'll try to answer the q's as best i can. thanks again for all your suggestions!

4 years... dude i'd suggest you get a new pc.
my bro tried to spend a fair bit of money making his 4 year old work, and when i counted the beans for him he'd already spent enough to get a new system with better specs.
keep your HDD safe so you can transfer it.
just my 2 cents here.

zero - i'd love to get a new one. 'cept i'll get a mac this time. but right now i'm a little short on scratch so i'm trying to salvage this one as long as i can. so that's why i'm asking
lets say this one is toast, how do i transfer my stuff from my PC HD to the mac?
- jakeyj0
wasn't the PS. i still get nothing
