graphic design is too new, lacks bone and episthemological connection to structural thinking. remember it started as a way for artists to make a living, though (just as poets started writing cheap novels). there are many good efforts, though. if think the first issues of Trueistrue were pretty close if not there already. there is also the problem of the medium. how to make it last for a long time.

i would almost always tend to agree with anything Paul Rand said. The guy was absolutely brilliant. Don't hate on him unless you've read up more about his influence, process, philosophy, etc.
The new book Paul Rand: Modernist Designer is excellent with much more in depth info on his life etc, more than most books that focus more on his work.

"graphic design is too new"
i see your point, but it's really not THAT new. compared to ART, why yes.

the problem is also that gd has not broken one single rule stated earlier by painting in the 50's or even before. it's all there.
- sauerbraten0
wha?
- winter0
not a single method, either in composition or technique or relating elements on a page. and there is also the problem of the "pièce unique", art belong to a single event. Jemma Gura tried that in 1cycleoccur. V. nice try. maybe she's has found it.

Why debate? Go out and create be it design or art.
- sauerbraten0
debate is important, endless bitching and sloth is not.

agreed

hey tim, saw your art site, super nice. we met briefly at bd4d seattle, we went out for beers after, you still in Bend?
cheers
- winter0
but thinkin' again, why shouldn't it be art also? There's a lot of fine damn wee darn things already. that leaves us in awe such as a Bacon or a Picasso. I still think the "digital" is a minus though. well...

I think you would have to be pretty closed minded to think art requies a canvas and paint to qualify as "Art" (kilosite/panagrafik).
I'd like to think that art is something, which has been created by a human without harming people or the envoirment *lol*, that evokes a emotion reaction or manages to create a unique feeling or atmosphere.

Hey..... Yup still in sunny Bend. I've been working quite a bit lately on my "ART". Thanks for checking it out.
Haha.. r_gaberz you nailed it right on the head... I'm so very closed minded.

very true r_g, very true. let me sign your manifesto!

this debate sorta reminds me of that scene in chasing amy where jason lee is catching shit for being an "inker"
it's pretty pointless. enjoy what you do

ok, that is very fashionable :) beer, chewing-gums, sneakers, you name it. let's remove knowledge from existence.
- sauerbraten0
... it's not like if any of us were to somehow miraculously solve this problem, we would approach our work any different..
however it's like i hate when people similarly are like, "debating philosophy is pointless.."
i think it depends on the person, but debates on these broad topics/issues can greatly influence your process, concept development, focus, etc.etc.etc.
bottom line is great design/art is largely based around great ideas and i hope these excercises help with that part of our development (as designers/artsist).

sauer said it all. taking an easy attitude is problably what is making design so easy and not so art. WTF it's not about elitism, or any snobbish stuff. people tend to mess things up pretty fast. it's about exploration and progress (the good one). what's wrong with that?
- winter0
and let me add that progress (the good one), thinking and goodness is the point of art and humanity. i hereby quit to watch all those worldwide killing in da news. AHAH!
