Ok, so this is gonna be a nooB question.

Working in After Effects, i'm never quite sure which the best codec to render my movies to is. Lately i've been going for Cinepak by Radius cos it's on top of the list of formats.

Which wud people recommend to achieve fastest render time/best quality/smallest file size?

I'm not much of a video head, but I think it pretty much depends on your content ( colours, movement etc .. ) also on your delivery method

Mr. Black is right, I work a lot in after effects and I almost always export to an avid, but if i'm rendering out animations, I always start with lossless, no compression. If it's heavy on graphics you can usually drop the "physical" size from 720x480 to 360x240 and get a huge drop in file size.

Play with the export settings and tailor it to fit you needs.

Also don't compress through after effects, it sux. I usually render lossless then use quicktime, or cleaner.
