I need an example site that has a "thank you for visiting" message after you close a full screen pop up. Anybody know of one? My client just doesn't get it.
thanks

HUH? How about 'thank you for visiting, come again'? lol

anyways. that's just a piece of javascript. first it opens your new window / popup and then it redirects to a thankyouverymuchforthefish.html page.

Why does he hate it? probably the same reason I do: I hate the feeling of being forced into looking at something, and ONLY that thing... its better if something grabs a users attention rather than forces it upon them. People like to have choices :) So put a fullscreen or browser window option on the front page.

just curious. personally i have no problems with pop-ups although i do agree that it should be an option on the frontpage so that you know what's coming. but pop-ups do have it's advantages. dunno, nothing personal, but sometimes i get the idea that people like to hate pop-ups. that it's some kind of trend or something. people used to hate flash as well in that same manner. then again. that's off topic.

I don't mind pop-ups. It's those full-screen bastards that get on my tits.

One quick point - if your visitor (like a lot of people) have pop-up killer software, they might not see it in the first place. Just somethin' to think about.
Pop-ups are pretty dangerous because they can piss-off a majority of your visitors depending on the site/implementation.

but that's the whole issue i guess. pop-ups initially were only used to promote stuff. especially pr0n oriented stuff. almost unsolicitated all the time. i guess that that would be the root of all evil. thing is i pretty much recognize for 99,9% if a pop-up is either unsolicitated or solicitated. i think a lot of other people have the same thing. i dunno about pop-up killers though. it's like having a frameset killer or a table killer. doesn't make sense.

ful screen pop ups are the work of the devil himself.
I have pure pitty for anyone who makes them.

i experienced full screen pop-ups that worked / was functional though. squarerootof-1 for instance was one.

well my guess would be that the devil thought pop-ups is for toys and he decided to really focus hard on annoying people by creating cross browser / cross platform incompatibilities.

popups are often still used for the 800x600 neanderthalers, with so many sidebars and shit on browsers these days it sometimes leaves a designer no other choice..

This is one of the biggest problems I have with clients - trying to balance proper web design and usability with clients demanding maximum promotion on the page - user be damned.
Dunno if it helps but I usually suggest banner ads or incorporating an interactive flash ad within the page itself rather than an external pop-up.
If it's for an experimental or design site, I wouldn't worry but if you've got a corporate oriented client - i feel your pain...

full screen or popups on a design/experimental website is one thing. any kind of popup on a commercial site is a bad idea - we did conversion tests and tanked terribly when we used them.
its not a "love to hate" thing. they just suck and make me have to kill a window i never asked for.
