I'm having difficulties deciding on whether I should get a dual 1.25ghz G4 or a single 1.6ghz G5.
I plan on using it for Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, etc.
Any advice would help. I would like to get the dual G5, but that's out of my price range.

G5 no question.
you can always upgrade it.

Hey Soler, thanks for the response.
Can't you also upgrade the dual G4?

the processor, yeah. but the g5 has a much faster bus speed, comes with twice the hd space, has double the RAM availability. just a better machine. to construct a g4 like that would cost way more.
But, in the end it depends what you use it for, and how fast you want it.

G5 no doubt.

dual G4, every G5 i've worked on has problems the apple techs cant even fix, every one. Something with the way it uses RAM.

that confuses things a bit!

a guy i know has a G5 and he says after using it for a while you need to shut it down until it cools down, or else it crashes constantly. i haven't heard of a G4 having that problem...

If you can keep your pants on for another month or so, wait for the 2nd generation G5's most the problems should be resloved plus you will be getting better technology for the same amount of money, No sence buying a out dated machine when they won't be making new G4 Power Macs.

I'll probably wait another month or so, unless I find a real good deal on the G5s.
However, I think the G4s actuallly look just as good as the G5s. That's just looks though, because I think both will do the job just as well.
Thanks for all the help guys.

G5, they rock. BUT.. wait a month or so.. the new G5s Speeds are coming out...so you will be able to get an even faster Single Processor G5 for the same price.
We have 11 G5s at work and have not problems. The only problem 1 had was a bad stick of RAM. But over all.. they SMOKE BALLS.
Get one.. you wont be disapointed

just wait for the G6

wait for the g7...

Wait for the H1

I'm not sure if 'smoking balls' is really a good thing or not.

Hard question to answer.
I would get a dual G4 over a single processor G5 1.6 if this machine is going to be used for Photoshop.Photoshop takes full advantage of the second CPU. I don’t think any other app. like Illustrator, QXP or flash would do the same.
Or
You can wait until June for the new G5 and maybe you can get your self a dual G5 1.8
That's what I have plan doing.
- Donvitoviti0
get a dual 1.8 when they drop in price when the new ones come out

Do you edit video at all? Adobe Premiere uses the second processor, and that's where it REALLY comes in handy. YOu can run photoshop on a PET 2000 with enough RAM. I agree, wait until the G5s come out.
By the way, I use an eMachines notebook...but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night.

Thanks guys.
I won't need it for video imaging, just Photoshop, Illustrator, and a little Flash.
Also, those with a dual processor and superdrive could you tell me what speeds you get when importing audio to iTunes?
Again thanks for all the help guys. I'll wait for the next update of the G5s to purchase.

Wait a month and the bottom of the line system will probably be a Dual G5.
There are always some problems with the 1 gen Apple systems but the G5 has been pretty good.
Most of the issues with it were software issues anyway.
I use a 1.6Ghz G5 at work and it's great.
It's noticably faster than my dual 867 G4 at home.
