I'll be going to NYC for a few days in late may for some much needed record shopping.
Does anyone know of any good hotels that are more off the beaten path? something smaller with a bit more character?
I remember Josh Davis would rave about some small artsy bed/breakfast type thing on the old dreamless forum... but alas...I'd rather get a personal recommendation for a place before i hit up google or the manhattan howard johnson.
much thanks

I stayed at the Hudson Hotel last year and loved it -- http://www.ianschragerhotels.com…
Super trendy and very nice.

you can sleep in the same room where Leaonard Cohen hooked up with Janis Joplin, or the room where Sid killed Nancy.
That's a story for the kids.

(apr 6 04, 18:13)The Hotel Chelsea is the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. They have this heater stuff in the rooms that made loud annoying sounds at the dead of night and when you called security, nobody answered. Plus, the place is ugly with all the thrift shop reject paintings -- dont' be misled by their website.

hands down the craziest hotel in NYC - all the rooms painted by artists - I took the k10k guys there and they freaked.
at least go and ask to see a room.

don't stay in the big ones you'll pay a pretty penny. Try for the cheaper one's of off 2nd Avenue, they run about $80 per night and aren't too bad, plus you are going to be runnnig around looking at shit anyway. :)

you could always stay cheaper in Queens or Brooklyn. The trains are close and it's much safer than before.
