Is there a resource on the web where one can find out if a name has been copywritten? I have a client with a few 'brand' names that they are looking into using and I want to make sure they can use them before they go through the effort of building a brand, id, logo, etc. I guess I'm looking for something similar to Network Solutions where you can plug in a domain name it it tells you if it's used.
Just curious.

depending on the size, you pretty much have to hire a copyright lawyer.
sorry, dont know of any online resources. It helps to run searches in google just to see if it is being used by a huge company or something

You have to check separately for each country.
For Canada: http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/sc_mrk… (see the Copyrights Database link on the left)
For US, I guess its the office of patents.

i am sure there is not one complete resource for names that are copywritten. as soon as you put (c) next to anything it is considered copywrighted, you do not have to register it in a db or anything
