I'm still learning the in and outs of video editing and need some advice.
I have 10hrs of footage that i need to download to my computer and store.
I've ripped a few of them as raw (avi) files. But they're about 15GB each.
I just wanted to know what i could compress them too, that would keep them at a good quality so that i could maybe use them in some basic video editing further down the track.
cheers.

why not just digitize what you need to work with and leave the rest of the raw footage on the tape(s)? If you want to work with the footage later you'll want your video files to be at best quality, meaning you shouldn't compress them yet.

some digitizing apps (even premiere) let you digitize it low-rez with timecode—you can then edit it and according to your log/edl digitize and replace only the parts you need to hi-rez automatically.
However your player needs to be controllable by the computer.
