pah, you were spoilt ! :)
I had a ZX81 in 1984.
It had 1k ram, which was nearly enough to hold a full screen of text for writing programs.
I couldnt ever get tape games to load from my cassette player, so I had mastered the BASIC book in about 2 months..
The challenge of making a payable game in 1k is something I couldnt do today..games tended to be of the form..
'steer the inverse K between the commas. If you complete the course, you get error code 4 (out of memory). If you crash, RUN again'..

haha, nice miko!
i had a Sinclair Spectrum and i had it hooked up to my stereo. It was the best, waiting 10 minutes for a game to load. Alot more satisfaction once you actually got it to work.
Oh, and i wrote the only game i've ever finished on it. But i couldnt save it cause for some reason the recording didnt work with the stereo i had, so i just kept it on for a week, and then it overheated and reset itself.
This is bringing back some acute nostalgia.

My first machine was the Spectrum too, back in 88. Then I went on to the Comadore Amiga 500, what a machine... oh hours spent in 'Dpaint' ! ! !
