okay it brought up a screen where it showed like a refresh icon, the icon to my primary HD, then a next arrow. i waited til the clock stopped moving and clicked next and it finished booting up.

that happened a couple of times on my old G3. i just rebooted it a couple of times, with and without extensions and with and without rebuilding the desktop , sang a little song and it was ok. (basically going for every combo, i think i also used silverline to mount it).

on another note: 08:39? what kind of time is that. i can understand an error in the hours but in minutes? what's this klingon time?

i've rebooted like 6 times this morning with no luck...

without extensions as well? do you have a tool that is able to mount drives? if so, try that. you can also try this: throw away the finder prefs, the mac os prefs, startup disk prefs and the system prefs, reboot, while reboot reset the pram (hold down the command+option+p+r keys) a couple of times, wait for the chimes twice or so and let go. if mounting and the above doesn't work than the only option i can think of is to remove the hd and install it in another mac and see what happens. if nothing happens than your disk is fucked. there are companies who are able to more and maybe are able to get the data off.

Sounding like drive failure... You could also run the Apple Diagnostics CD...
