ibook upgrade

  I have a 500mhz ibook with 256 ram and want to upgrade the memory. I have seen on macsales.com that it is possible to buy 512 of RAM, which would put me at 768. The guy at the apple store had said the maximum I can get out of my ibook is 660. So that means I would have to buy a 256 and a 128. Is he right, or can i buy the 512 and be at 768?

  I upgraded my girlfriends 6/700mhz iBook and put a 512 in the only available slot. iBooks come with a non-replaceable 128 chip. So the totally amount of ram is 640.
