Get a clip art set.
By hand: In Illustrator... create a circle and add multiple points. Select the points that make sense to spike, select em and use the transform deal to make them come out of the circle. Thats at least how i used to do it when it was cool the first time around.

There's a special tool in Ilustrtor, its in the same tab with Rectangle tool, Just dobleclick on the working area, put in the number of "spikes" and drag - voilaa

Illustrator, star tool, click on page once with the tool, give it some numbers and there you go. Most likely take a few times to get it how you want it. I think this is what oxoli was getting at.

I almost could not believe it took that many people til somebody gave the tip about the star tool in illustrator. as Contribute said, just enter how many spikes you want like 30, enter inside radius value, and enter outside radius value. Hope that helps a little.

Thanks a lot guys. I had initially thought the star tool had that feature in Illustrator but I did not know how to get the prompt to show up.
Thanks again for all the help!
