This is off-topic and I'll try and keep it brief. I'm just a bit confused and also young, and am hoping for a bit of advice.
I worked for 3 years as a designer / programmer and went on a trip (at which time I quit my job), came back and got a good job in industrial automation paying good money, awesome girlfriend, decent life. I'm now considering dropping it all and moving to Oregon so that I can go live a simple life with a couple friends and a shitty job. Dropping out of 'success'. I've been reading quite a bit buddhist texts and this just seems right. I'm 23, am I losing my mind, running away, ... chasing the truth? Design is definitely only going to be a hobby, not a career, too much stress.
I don't have a shrink or I'd go hang out for a couple hours, maybe.

you're too young, what are you going to do when you get tired of simple?
- brooke0
Simple. Follow your joy.

You're a quitter and you should stop smoking so much weed. The simple life surely isn't aws romantic as you picture it. Struggling to make ends meet and working a shitty job that takes advantage of you and pays you sh*t... no girl will date you cuz you have no money and can't afford to even leave the house...
Get off drugs you damn hippie!

your girlfriend can't be that AWESOME then for you to take opinions from a little grey box of text.

there are very few places in the world where the simple life is still simple. Make your choice wisely.

This may sound corny, but i'm waiting for stuff to dearchive, but if you're getting into buddhism, take the middle path. You don't want success, fine. But there is no exalted glory in the other extreme. Balance the two. Freelance design and take a part time job somewhere.

Forgot what a ruthless crowd this was.
Funny thing is I stopped smoking weed 8 months ago.
Hopefully simple won't get tired, I've spent much time with good books lately and believe that persuing my own goals will be more rewarding.
The girl is of the same opinion of myself, we need to get to know ourselves before we can truly love eachother.
..and the box isn't grey anymore.
I'm just trying to justify my thoughts, and I believe that I was/am somewhat like the people on this board, I love to play with a computer to express myself at the very least. It's a rather risky step is all, sometimes you question yourself. Obviously my friends are of the same opinion as me, so they aren't of much help.
Thanks for the support brooke.

thanks toastie, mayo.
I do have to make my life simple, location isn't going to be the trick, (though Orange County doesn't seem to lend itself very kindly).
Thanks.

I may be in the same boat as you, Nhnu... Trying to figure out what's really important. I'm not afraid of change, thankfully, but sometimes it's difficult to know where to start... especially when you want to move but just bought all this new designer furniture. :)
I may be headed towards a simple life, too, I think. We'll see.
