trying to clean up my sister's laptop, the thing's a mess. i think i got most of the sypware off, but the DNS shit is all fucked up.
i can't bring up google or any other search engine, and most of the time when i type in a URL it forwards me to some crappy, fake-ass search engine site with a bunch of ads.
i remember there was a file that you can edit to fix the problem... anyone know the name of it?

ok, i remember it being a file called hosts, i think, but don't think that fixed it.
any ideas? i ran adaware and now, when i type in google.com, or most any other URL, instead of taking me to that aforementioned fake search engine, it simply says page cannot be displayed.
only a few sites work, like my own and NT.

- run AdAware with the latest updates
- run Spybot Search and Destroy with the latest updates
- run an antivirus with the latest updates
- go to windowsupdate.com and get the, wait for it, latest updatesDo all of this and you should be able to salvage it. Otherwise just back up whatever you can and reformat it, everybody will be happier. My girlfriend's family computer was pretty messed up the same way.
