1. I know it is advised to have a version of one's reel on the web and on DVD. Is it completely necessary to have a DVD in addition to a web version?
2. How does one reformat certain projects for a reel, when some projects have different dimensions?
3. What is the recommended amount of projects one should have in one's reel?

The majority of motion graphics firms focus on broadcast design, so the work usually has a standard NTSC size (720 x 486). So most work does not require resizing (just shrunk down for the web).
As far as the amount of projects in one's reel, there is no recommended amount.
A good reel is quality over quantity. Only use work you are confident in showing.
It is all about the editing and how the work is shown.good luck.
