Kerning Algorithm?

I’m designing a UI for an embedded system that can only use mono fonts. This looks horrible and takes up nearly the entire screen just to display a few simple words.

I was thinking it might be possible to write a kerning algorithm. I’ve searched the web and can’t seem to find any samples as to how “good” fonts calculate these values. Do any of you have any experience in this stuff?

    Thanks!

Actually, I believe type designers build in kerning pairs into each of their fonts. Each designed font normally have varying glyphs and features that requires a designer to adjust the kerning settings.

Designers normally can't agree on a single theory/setting/formula for kerning.
