As a workhorse machine, who here uses a laptop?
i'm thinking of ditching my Dell P4 1.5gHz machine for a high end notebook.
Any thoughts?

Depends if u move around enough to justify gettiing one, the amount u spend on a top end laptop u could get a very nice desktop pc.
just wot i think :)

I flitter between working from home and going into the office.
I also would like to be able to have a laptop so mmy family can go down the coast and I can stay in touch with work at the same time.
It would be more for web development than stuff like photoshop or video work.

ah well get a nice 17" laptop then - are you mac or PC? PC I am guessing - whats your budget?

for web development there is no reason you need a desktop, many laptops have the power to handle that...i ditched my desktop for a powerbook, and doubt i will ever go back...you think of reasons a laptop would be cool now, but once you get one you discover many more instances where youre glad your machine is portable....

it depends on what you do.
but it's always better to have a really powerful desktop and a not-so powerful but slim laptop.

i think i misunderstood the question *blush*
anyways, i think if you're doing web u can deal with a laptop..
ive got a g4 ibook and it does me fine.. although i wish i had a pbook
i like my PC desktop too though..

i worked solely on a laptop for a year and a half and it worked soooo well.
I did move 4 times in one year so it saved my ass many many times to have my work portable. I worked off the 14" screen with a 17" lcd next to it and it was a great setup. I did everything from web dev to print work and video on it. Now i'm doing all my work on a desktop and wish that its fan wasn't so loud. I almost long to work on the laptop again:-)

Thanks everyone.
i'm looking at a Dell - maybe the Dell Inspiron 5150

i've heard bad things about Dell laptops. Not bad really, just their stuff breaks after awhile in many cases. If you're going for a PC laptop, i'd suggest an IBM ThinkPad, they might look boxy, but they're probably the toughest and most reliable laptops i've come across.

Laptop for your moving purposes and probably desktop for heavy photoshop or 3d work.
My personal recommendation is HP zd7000 series laptop. I just got one with 17" widescreen, P4 3.06Ghz HT, 512 MB, GeForce 5600 128 Mb, 60 Gb HDD 5400 (but you can change that later to new 7200rpm drive) and all the shizzle with 54g wi-fi for $1700.
It got best reviews from both PC World and C-Net as the best PC laptop.
One thing though when you shop through HP.com. Don't forget to go here:
http://www.xpbargains.com/st_dea…You will find coupons that are not advertised on their site, like the one I used for 10% off. So my laptop was around $2k but with this discount it turned out to be $1700. Also, did I mention 6months no payments, if you need it.
Can't beat this. Add another $249 for the super-cool docking station (check it out when you customize zd7000) when you're at home and you got yourself a desktop and laptop in one.

i 2nd the opinion of the thinkpad.
they are honestly some of the toughest and most reliable notebooks on the planet.
they may look fugly but they are seriously rock solid.

until they start manufacturing dual display 17" laptops that fold up into a reasonable space, i'll be sticking to my desktop. i love the real estate dual 17 inch LCDs give me. i found that when i had a laptop and dual monitor desktop, much of my laptop time was spent trying to drag stuff onto the other screen, which didn't exist :)

I love my laptop.
Check out these ACI models, you'll be herad pressed to find anything more powerful, and they're surprisingly cheap.
