I´ve recently finished some photo retouch and composition job for a psychedellic trance label. We´re charging round u$s 20 per piece.
The retouch includes perfecting some skin on the musicians, creating psychedellic backgrounds and then compositing all together in a med-resolution piece to be used as promotional material (posters, flyers, etc)
The client thinks we´re a little overpriced, not because of the results wich he finds, in his own owrds, "shocking, wonderful, beautiful, original
and expensive !"...and my question is. Are we that expensive? Or are we overall kinda cheap?
How much are you charging a photo retouch hour or piece? Are the any standard rates I should know of?
- zach0
i cannot imagine that being overpriced.
regardless of the quality.

Ohh...and I forgot to mention this..
The label is based in Europe and we´re based in Argentina. The relation Peso/Euro is above 3 to 1. So i´m sure they´ll be dealing with so so much more money if they were hiring locally, that´s why they hire us: we´re cheap.
But....do we need to be cheaper than this?

For 20 bux you are doing all of that? Your client is a rock smoker if he thinks that is too much. How many hours of work is it?
- zach0
They're busting your huevos, amigo.
your rates are barato.
- erroneo0
oops...I knew it!...
We´re working about 4/6 hours per piece. I can´t, at this point, charge them more (even though as from your comments I think should) but charging them less sounded like nonsense to me.Have any idea on how much would they´d be paying in American or some Europe markets?
"busted huevos" erroneo.
- heyapat0
yes you are cheap. I'd hire you to retouch
- blueless0
$20per piece?
Try $60 per hour...
- Chip0
$200 would be reasonable, add a zero man.

Put it this way, if you can do that work in 15 minutes it's OK.

retouch for print costs bucks. ask any artworker or repro house.
i've just mailed the girlfriend who works at a design agency specialising in packaging design and repro. will put up the costs in a mo.
- smellvetica0
from the lady "Depends on project, roughly £100 per hour."

Wow...no wonder why i´m not making any money!!
Guys...thank you so much for the feedback and info on this.
I really should re define the kind of work we´re doing here and how much we´re charging for it.
Thank you again.
I´ll keep posting here to keep you updated if I can correct this and how.

that guy's complaining about paying 20 bucks for 4 hours of work?? I'd smack him upside the head.. $30 per hour minimum.

all of it, if you want me to come to your office for a meeting, its still $75Cdn
- Carty0
i charge the standard $35 per hour, but will wheel and deal for certain people. stick to the fees. you are charging for your skill set. get loochie for it.
- ********0
don't bend, stick to your guns it works out in the end
- shant0
Yeah, but you're forgetting that the work is for trance DJ's.
That makes $20 expensive. You're ripping that guy off.

Where I live it's around 1 euro to 15 kroons, and 20$ a pop probably wouldn't be turned down. Of course I look around here at some of these threads regarding rates and I think I should be living somewhere else.
My point is, you're not overcharging, but you have to do what you have to do sometimes. Pimp it for what you can though, if the goods are worth it.
