silly question, but how do i access the special characters for each family and individual weight

That's a sticky question to ask for. You looking for it for free or do you want to know how to use it? Asking for fonts can get you in trouble. ;)

you have the key caps app? command, option and shift are all modifiers for the other keys.
on the mac

dude... there's a character map with Windows software
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map
You can do cut and paste for there or learn the keyboard (alt+) shortcuts.
