I'm working with a CMYK AI document and my client wants the PMS colors for the colors I'm using.. Having rarely worked with PMS, does anyone know of the easiest way to convert a CMYK value to PMS? I don't have a color reference guide to look at. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

you need to get a colour reference book, other wise you're really just guessing.

i would sample in photoshop...it's on most of the time...if it's not, it gets you prety close for you to use your eye on it.
peace.

Buy a Pantone book and charge it to the job as "supplies" --- the client asked for it. If you're doing print work it's a must have.

you guys don't like photoshop huh? i've found it's been way accurate if you have a good sampling of the cmyk.

There are Pantone colors that are outside the CMYK and RGB color spaces. If you're doing print and spec'ing PMS colors you need a sample book. Printing on coated or uncoated paper can also dramatically effect color - you need a swatch book to live up to your professional responsibility to your client ... or else you're slacking. You might get lucky a few times but it'll be only a matter of time before you get burned and the client is pissed and there's 5000 of some printed piece that looks like crap. Bite the bullet and buy the tools needed to do the job right - like I said, bill it back to them.

I just wear a bracelet that says "what would dolan do"
that seems to work. :)

Any comments on the Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color?

Window>Swatch Libraries
Then pick the Pantone library you want ie coated, un, metallic. I'm guessing you are not working with a lot of colors so it should be fairly easy to do, especially if the client specified the PMS #'s. Remember, the more colors, the more plates, the more $$$.

I gave them the values for matte and specified that.. I bet they end up printing on gloss for something else down the line and it looks horrible.. hehe. I don't trust their printer considering they gave me his address which was on aol.. So I'm guessing they're going ultra cheap on the printing to begin with.
