ok our hosting providers equipment went down on the weekend due to a "ext3 file system corruption" I have no idea what this means nor would I know how to repair any damaged files due to its failure.
So a few people lost a whack of emails and one of our forums no longer works. Now the hosting people say that if we want them to fix the forum they would have to charge us???
So their system failed we lost important information and have parts of the sites that no longer work......Who's responsible?

-ext3 is linux filesystem type.
-it's their fault
-it's your falut too for not backing it up locally.

"before you blame get the facts. "
thats why i'm here....
I guess I should have backed up everything, but they are the hosting companyy and should take responsibilty for their equipment and fix a relatively minor issue with a phpbb forum. Then make some suggestions on how this can be avoided in the future.
I could be wrong, after all i'm just a designer/developer not a system admin who is paying a over $700 month for hosting....

effour,
no matter how reliable a host might be, they are prone to errors like everyone else and it's generally a good idea to keep it safe and keep a local copy of everything that's on the server.
As for ext3, i could tell you about it and what could be done, but it wont help you unless you have root access to the server. And the hosting company, if they're any good should already know that stuff.

fair enough....
I dont even have a problem paying people to fix errors...the reason i'm starting to get pissed is because they give us such shitty support. And brush us off when this stuff happens... we received a bill last month for 2.5 hrs work for upping our limit in a php.ini file??? wtf.
oh well we are gonna move away from these guys and make sure I get some descent back ups happening at our new place.
thanks for the advice toastie.

Please tell what host company you use. I would like to stay far away from them in the future.

I don't mean to be insensitive, but you should back you site up often. Sorry about the loss :(
