Am I the last Mac user on the planet to figure out that Safari can open up an ftp site on one's desktop as though it were a drive?
I just typed in my ftp login in the Safari browser window this morning and the browser did nothing but I saw the little drive icon pop up on my desktop.
Wow...the little things! :)

what are you talking about

In Safari, the browser? If you type in ftp.yoursite.com as the address, instead of getting a browser listing of the files on your ftp server, Safari mounts the ftp site on your desktop as though its an external harddrive or a network drive.
So, you can manage, place or delete files on your site directly from your OSX desktop...rather than using an ftp software like Transmit.

yeah, it's nice! I like it, use it a lot.

So ok iam trying to connect to an ftp adress here.
I have the IP adress, user ID and password so do I type
ftp://12.24.53. --etc etc
?
- monkeyshine0
yes, when you type in the ftp address, you will be prompted to enter user ID and password and then it looks like nothing is happening but peek at your desktop! voila!
- Bullitt0
it opens an Explorer window once Ive typed in the ftp in safari for some reason, is that correct?

that is the coolest thing I have ever seen.
If only I hadn't just 'bought' transmit
- Xentic0
I don't think you can use it for the advanced FTP work... like setting permissions and stuff like that...
So you'll still need Transmit or Fetch or something.

When I try, the FTP drive mounts, but then I can' t write or upload any files. I can when I use transmit. Any suggestions?
Mac OSX 10.2.6

if explorer opens, go to safai, preferences, set safari as your default browser. (10.3). i think in jag, you have to go to sys prefs and change default browser to safari in the .mac or internet button. also, i dont think you can upload files to an ftp via finder, only download. its a great feature, i hope they implement uploading in the future.

oh pooh. I guess you can't upload. Sorry to get everyone worked up. WHY?! It seems like you should be able to somehow change permissions?
It still rocks.
