how does it compare to NYC in terms of real estate prices, cost of living, etc? also... please recommend good (high value) neighborhoods to think about looking for a place to live...
thanks.

expect to pay 1500 and up for a 1 bedroom apt.
if you split a 2 or 3 bedroom you can pay 7-900
If you move here.. you will want to make 50k-60k to make it... preferablly 60k for a single person... 70k+ for 2 people etc.
The best way to live is to have a roomate or spouse... then you can both work and do well. When you go less than 50k its hard.

here are neighborhoods....
Nob Hill, Pacific Heights, Noe Valley, Russian Hill, Cole Valley,Hays Valley, Bernal Heights are good ones. I like Noe Valley and Russian Hill Personally but there are ttons of great places..... Just make sure to visit the areas you move to before moving.

ps. you can pay less than 1500 definately.. but to live in good areas... you will pay more..
Pretty much you have to look really hard for a deal... also... you can get some decent places that border not so good neighboorhoods and save money... AKA Mission District.

good luck finding anything under 1500 in SF itself, you can go across the bay a bit to find something cheaper, prices here are rediculous :(

You can find under 1500, just not always teh best places..but just keep your eye out.

A friend of mine has a place somewhere round Fillmore and lower haight areas.
he pays about 1,200 for an okay one bedroom. but he didn't even look around much.
deals are out there. the best ones you probably won't find on teh internet. just cruise around the neighborhoods that interest you.
