3ds to maya question

I am using 3DS MAx and have several .3ds and .max files i need to convert to a format Maya can understand, for our Maya guy at work. I have access to Max and Maya and was wondering about the best way to accomplish this. Thanks for your time.

I think there is a plug in in maya to open 3ds files, but you need to activate it... Don't remember where... probably in the preferences...

It depends on how much info you want to retain in the transfer.
If it is only geometry you can just export to dxf or obj but if you want to keep info like lights and materials, etc you may want to consider something like Polytrans for Maya.
but even that won't make a perfect transfer. sorry.
