Changing visibility of multiple layers at once

  I want to close a list of layers from one click,
  for a basic menu system, you click one and I want all the others to close...

  whats a good method of doing this?

  (i'm fine with basic hide/show layers kinda stuff, but this array of them idea hasn't quite sunk in yet)
