Was wondering if anyone could reccommend a very professional, quality printing company?

Time to step it up a notch.

I'm in the Chicago area... location does matter... but I would also be interested in finding an internet printing company as well that would ship finals to me.

    If I may ask...

What does everyone here look for in a printing company?

Also, another related q for any print savvy individuals...

What is the standard live area for the more professional publications? Ie. popular magazines like wired or IDN... etc. The printing company we use says about 1/4 in.

Seems to me that's somewhat of a large margin for error.

I would assume that large publications have their own inhouse printing done?

If not ... does anyone know what companies they might use?

I'm quite a curious monkey today

I look to see the quality of their facilities. I also try to meet the pressmen. If thet're no good - your job won't be either.

I would never work with a printer I couldn't go see. I think that's a crucial part of the game. Shit - the printing is definately the most important part - who cares what it looks like on screen, right.

anywho - .25" is a large margin for error. Maybe they just say that to cover their own asses. I can't imagine they're that inaccurate.

If you are looking for someone do do large run, perfect bound, magazines - find a printer who specializes in heat set web printing. That's how the pretty magazines are done.

I'm sure your resources aren't tooo limited in Chicago.

and no. I seriously doubt any large publications do their own printing. I can't imagine that's cost effective at all. They do probably work VERY close with their printer, and have a trusting and established relationship with them.
