I just recently started using iTunes and the song that i downloaded was in .m4p format. Are all downloads on iTunes in this format? and how do I convert that to .mp3?

All ITMS songs are .M4P AKA AAC format AKA .MP4. It is the Predecessor to MP3, and provides greater compression with higher audio quality.
they also have a built in DRM to prevent you from freely sharing your music via P2P networks.
so therefore converting it would be breaking the TOS from Apple.

Wait. so if M4P is the predecessor of MP3, and it is superior, why the hell is MP3 its descendant?

huh

If you convert a file that's already compressed (the 128k AAC/MP4 file you just downloaded) to MP3 you'll be compressing it again and losing more quality. Bad idea.
Why do you want to change it into an mp3?

AAAAAAAAAAHHH
well my whole music collection is .mp3. I dont want to start collecting .m4p files now!
And thanks industry73 for the email.

Shouldn't make any difference if you play them through iTunes and an iPod. If you've got a different mp3 player you might be stuck, I think some play mp4 as well though.

burn them to a disc (regular music format) and rip them back in. voila, mp3.

yeah i wish some of the songs i got from the itunes store were in .mp3 format because i have an mp3 cd player in my car. but whatever, its not a huge deal, just sometimes a bit annoying.

lmfao @ mp4
lame attempt to stop file sharing

My solution was to open Soundforge and directly record the song while I play it in iTunes. I got an mp3 player in my car too, so this was my quickest solution.

i ran into this when i downloaded the streets remix album.... you can only burn those i-tunes tracks 3 or 4 times, so i burned a CD and ripped it back as a high bitrate mp3
