We are doing designs on Zip-up joggers, our printers are telling us that they can not print over the zipper. I see Zip-up sweatshirts and joggers all the time that have prints that cross the zipper. Does anyone know what the deal is, can you recommend a place that can do this.

what we do is print them ourselves. If you have the time and $ build a simple one color press and do that portion yourself. There is a great book out there called "How to print t-shirts for fun and profit" that will guide you in the right direction to build your own press. If you are doing a large production run you can find one of the big printers to do it. Where you located?

flat bed printers can print over anything but it's pricey and the ink is stinky....
i think they used for applications like printing on miniblinds or garage doors, things like that.

I am in Denver CO. We have a big printer, they tell us that they have "State of the art equipment"
but can't print over zippers. They told us to put a small space in the design but we don't want to do that.

take that one design to someone else who can then?

I would say the flat bed printer is a good choice or like I said do it yourself. Can you detach the zippers and lay them out next to each other? If you can do this then make a screen that matches that pattern and place it ontop of the zippers. THat way you dont have to build a press. Just buy a screen, paint, and a few other supplies and you should be good to go.
ANyway you look at this its a tough one.

to print over zip you have to do it before to put the zip of course.. that means you have to buy large quantities of ythis model etc etc..
all the AA models etc etc are just for small quantities printer like small labels etc..
it's the same when you want to do front to back print , embroidery from the front to the back etc..
it's a bit long to explain but your printer is right.. thre is no way you can do that once the sip is on the fleece or the sweat shirtgood luck

bomy_dick is right.
When you're printing on the zip, the ink will float where you don't want it, at the non-image area's because the distance between is becoming too small. Maybe you can make a wooden plate with a ditch where the zip can be put in while you're printing. This isn't ideal ofcourse.

Im sure your printer can print it, but it may have undesirable results and they don't want to deal with you being pissed about it.

can you get a type of sweatshirt with a fabric flap that covers the zipper? Just trying to think of a way to avoid the zipper mess altogether.
