what is a concept?

now, I was today at an interview. the agency 'praised' me for my
stuff, but they miss however the CONCEPT in my graphic work.what exactly now should the CONCEPT be? is it idea? red thread?
also with colours, fig. etc. a concept can be arranged which I show
on http://www.boogie project.ch/ (in the structure)is the large film meant with CONCEPT or which? and which
masters show me which the word CONCEPT contained? books? formation?

I'm doing a Digital Media Design study and they're only talking about the concept...
Before you start working on a project you need to write the concept... It's the idea behind the product... if you know what I mean.

i dont know to be honest.
my 'concepts' are the reason i chose to go down a particular route for a design.
i come up with the concept, try out ideas and then refine them* till i end up with a piece of design that works*.
*providing the client doesnt tear into it and ruin it

in school: a concept was the justification and ideology behind color, placement, theme etc. basically the why you did what you did.
at the agency: its anything you put down for the presentation. a mindless activity of color composition and type. its pretty lame how concept has no meaning at some places.

if you havent got a reason as to why you did a peice of work the way you did, wel what was the point in doing it?

rasp, yes, i am pretty sure it's that. i will now take all my work and write for every design the 'debriefing' (what was the request, the search for the idea, the result) maybe it will help me to explain things better!
